In “Evolution”, the collection of portraits, with its suggestion of nudity, incites the viewer to identify himself with a realm of Being deprived of all social, cultural or historical ornament. McManus offers the possibility of a meeting, a souvenir or a recognition of that space within the human condition where invisibility and silence commune. Here, the artist’s eye has captured each face in such a way that the contemplative act encourages anxiety, rather than calms it ; like so many mirrors, the portraits reveal an existential condition that we forgot at a given moment in our history. So it is not surprising that McManus forsakes the representation of the body, knowing that it has become more and more an object of worship for the idolatrous. The body has been irreversibly violated, exposed, dismembered, serialized. The artist, aware of this fate, restores the primary essence that, according to the thinker Luis Oyarzún, echoes with “the wrenching scream and near-mad anxiety that possess us in our search to discover who we are…”
